Staff Sgt. Robert J. Powell, a police advisory team staff noncommissioned officer-in-charge with 1st Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment, assess a target with an Afghan Local Police academy recruit on during a marksmanship class at the small arms firing range here, Nov. 25. The Afghanistan Ministry of Interior funded academy trains local men from various “watons”, or village, to become police officers. The recruits learn marksmanship skills, policing tactics and infantry engagement techniques from the Marines of 1/9 to protect their community. Powell is a native of Watertown, New York.
