SOME LARGE-LEAVED ORNAMENTAL PLANTS 41 woolly stalk to the curious ligulate sheath which on the upper part of stout stems is continuous between leaves in spiral fashion. At the apex of each stem is borne a cylindrical spike 3 to 8 inches in length and 1 to 2 inches in diameter. The spike is made up of smooth, dull red, overlapping bracts marked with stripes of yellow green, between which arise the inch-long yellow tubular flowers.
