Description: This photo shows an example of a side arm oil spill collection system deployed by an oil spill removal organization (OSRO) during an exercise. The system consists of an outrigger and a sweeping boom extending from the side of a response vessel. The forward movement of the vessel herds oil on the surface of the water towards a recovery device located at the bottom of the pocket formed by the boom and side of the vessel. In this example the removal device is an oleophilic brush skimmer (the box feature on the right). The oil sticks to the bristles of the brushes where it is then scraped and stored on the vessel. BSEE Preparedness Analysts from the Oil Spill Preparedness Division (OSPD) regularly inspect these and other spill recovery systems to ensure offshore facility owners have access to operable response equipment listed in their offshore oil spill response plans.
