Royal Air Force 1939-1945- Coastal Command C4550
Summary
Royal Air Force 1939-1945- Coastal Command
In July and August 1944 Mosquitos of No 248 Squadron and No 235 (newly converted from Beaufighters) were operating together on escort and anti-shipping strikes along the west coast of France. On the evening of 9 August a dozen Mosquito VIs from No 253 Squadron and a pair of Mk XVIII 'Tsetses' from No 248 Squadron encountered four Dornier Do217s over the Gironde estuary. This photograph shows a Mosquito orbiting the funeral pyre of one of two Dorniers destroyed in this distinctly one-sided engagement.
