Repentance of Peter, sculpture collection Rijksmuseum
Summary
The figure of the kneeling apostle is built up of diagonal planes that extend into the piled rocks. This compact composition directs the viewer’s gaze to very heart of the work, namely Peter’s contorted face and clasped hands. The apostle’s moral dilemma – he has just denied knowing Jesus – is dramatized with such intensity that the sculpture has a distinctly modern appearance.
