1915, with the 2nd Bat-talion of his regiment. From Havre his regiment wasdespatched to the Front as reinforcements just after theBattle of Neuve Chapelle. At dawn on Sunday, the 9thMay, the 2nd Rifle Brigade, together with the IrishRifles, attacked the German trenches at Fromilles, nearFestubert. They captured and went beyond the firstenemy position, but could not maintain their groundowing to heavy casualties, and as the Germans hadadvanced on both flanks, they had to fall back overopen ground and under very heavy fire. Only 150 outof 1100 men of the 2nd Rifle Brigade got back to theBritish lines. The last that was known of RiflemanNewmarch was that he and half-a-dozen others reached, and attempted to fortify, a small building—their objec-tive—but none of these men survived, and nothing wasever ascertained as to the manner of their death. TheCorporal who led the men was severely wounded outsidethe building, and can give no further particulars beyondthe above account. LondonStaff
