Rear Adm. Steven H. Ratti, commander of the 5th Coast Guard District, presents a Silver Lifesaving Medal to Claud Whitehurst on Saturday, Dec. 21, 2013, in Virginia Beach, Va., to commemorate the 113th anniversary of the rescue of five crew members from the wreck of the schooner Jennie Hall off Virginia Beach during a gale. Whitehurst’s grandfather, George Washington Whitehurst, earned the medal along with six other members of the U.S. Life-Saving Service for his bravery during the rescue.
