Quiet Onlooker, US Army Photo
Summary
To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Hamel, leadership of the 76th Infantry Brigade Combat Team were invited to a ceremony at one of the last remaining American chapels outside of Rockhampton, Australia. During the ceremony they were visited by this quiet onlooker. On July 4, 1918 the Australian Corps, led by Gen. Sir John Monash, were victorious at the Battle of Hamel. By this time in the war Australian soldiers had become highly skilled in combat. They provided training to American soldiers who joined them to fight at Le Hamel. Over time, Australian and American forces built a mutual respect and friendship that endures today. (U.S. Army Photo by Public Affairs Broadcast Journalist Spc. Joshua A. Syberg / Released)
