Political balance - U.S. Presidential Elections

description

Summary

Election of 1840. The "log cabin and hard cider" campaign. A balance marked "government's true scales" and supported by "popular opinion" has William Henry Harrison, the Whig candidates on one side and Martin Van Buren, the incumbent, on the other. Harrison defeated Van Buren, but died shortly after inauguration. He was succeeded by John Tyler. Many prominent political figures of the day are represented in this cartoon.
