It was im-possible to do much busiuess along thePacific Coast until a trade language oleasy form had gradually formed itself. 1think that Horatio Hale, at one time amember of the United States exploringexpedition, was about the first to devoteany attention to this subject. He drewup a vocabulary of about 250 words. Ofthese 18 were of Nootka origin, 111 wereChinook, 10 formed by onomatopceia, 31English, 34 French, and the remainder ofdoubtful origin. Iu 1803 the vocabularyhad increased to 500 words and a simplegrammar had developed. Now v/e oftenhear jargon in Oregon. There are dic-tionaries of jargon, and sermons arepreached and songs sung in the newChinook.
