and, takenin connection with the higher steam pressures carriedin the train line to satisfactorily effect the heating ofthese long trains, the jarring on fast runs causes con-siderable leakage of steam, especially in passing aroundcurves. In the new arrangement the hose is relievedof the weight of the couplers both when coupled andwhen separated, the couplers being supported by meansof a chain attached to the platform and sill, and a con-nection between the chain and coupler is made by meansof a lever or lock hinged onto the coupler attached tothe same car and bearing on the mating coupler of theadjacent car insuch a manner as to force the gasketsinto close contact. This removes all the weight from thehose, and presses the gaskets together with a force muchgreater than that due to their weight and the action ofthe cam and wedge, which are still retained as integralparts of the coupler.
