Summary

Significance: Traditionally built in 1653 and reputedly the oldest public building in English America, the Gaol, although evidently an 18th century construction, is nevertheless of major significance as a very early surviving American jail with many original fittings intact. The building was declared a National Historic Landmark on November 24, 1968.
