It constitutes a compact, classified, indexed compendium, available forready reference, of the achievements and ideas of society, in all phases of itsactivities, extending to the most material as well as to the most refined. The Catalogue of such a Universal Exposition is, therefore, perhaps themost comprehensive and representative contemporary record of the progress andcondition of the human race that may be devised. It is a succinct and authenticrecord of the Exhibits of the Exposition, which are the evidences of the capac-ity and performance in all lines, intellectual, social and industrial, of all thepeoples of the world. The value of such a document, and its significance so-cially and commercially, are incalculable. Frederick J. V. Skiff, Director of Exhibits.
