eyond all former boundaries, flowed back again and inundatedWestern Missouri. Quantrells nominal battalion—yielding tothe pressure of the exodus—left him only the old guard as arallying point. It was necessary again to reorganize. Greggwas made First Lieutenant; Todd, Second; Scott, Third; Blunt,Orderly Sergeant; James Tucker, First Duty Sergeant;Younger, Second; Hendrix, Third; Poole, Fourth; JamesLittle, First Corporal; Dick Burnes, Second; Hicks George,Third, and Hi. George, Fourth. After this re-organization,the Guerrillas stripped themselves for steady fighting. Incidentsand personages suited the epoch. Federal troops were every-where ; infantry at the posts, cavalry on the war paths. Thesombre defiance mingled with despair did not come until1864; in 1862 the Guerrillas laughed as they fought. And theyfought by streams and bridges, where roads crossed and forkedand where trees or hollows were. They fought from housesand hay-stacks; on foot and on horseback; at night, when the
