Summary

This print, published in February of 1895, the month of China's surrender, shows the Chinese fleeing before the giant strides of the Japanese army. It is from a series of fifty prints created by Kiyochika over the course of the war which make fun of the Chinese enemy. Other prints from the series appear on the wall above.

Kobayashi Kiyochika (小林清親) was a Japanese artist and printmaker who lived from 1847 to 1915. He is known for his depictions of modernising Japan during the Meiji period (1868-1912), especially for his use of Western-style perspective and lighting techniques in his prints. Kiyochika was also an accomplished painter and illustrator and his works often depicted scenes of daily life, landscapes and historical events. He was a member of the Meiji Fine Arts Society and was recognised as one of the leading artists of his time. Today his prints and paintings are highly sought after by collectors and art lovers around the world.
