CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- A solid-fueled booster is lifted off a trailer at Launch Complex 17-B at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida where a United Launch Alliance Delta II is being prepared for launch. The Delta II will carry NASA's Gravity Recovery and Interior Laboratory, or GRAIL, spacecraft into lunar orbit. The GRAIL mission is a part of NASA's Discovery Program. GRAIL will fly twin spacecraft in tandem orbits around the moon for several months to measure its gravity field. The mission also will answer longstanding questions about Earth's moon and provide scientists a better understanding of how Earth and other rocky planets in the solar system formed. KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, Fla. -- At Launch Pad 39A, workers attach umbilical hoses onto the payload canister with the Integrated Truss Structure Z1 inside. The hoses will maintain the environmentally controlled environment while the canister is lifted up the Rotating Service Structure to the Payload Changeout Room. There the Z1 truss will be removed and later transferred to Space Shuttle Discovery’s payload bay. The Z1 truss is the first of 10 that will become the backbone of the International Space Station, eventually stretching the length of a football field. Along with its companion payload, the third Pressurized Mating Adapter, the Z1 is scheduled to be launched aboard Discovery Oct. 5 at 9:38 p.m. EDT KSC00pp1353

Pearl Harbor, Hawaii (Oct. 05, 2004) Marisco Ltd. workers repair the aging hull of the decommissioned Balao-class submarine USS Bowfin (SS 287) at their shipyard near the former Naval Air Station Barber's Point, during a restoration project. Bowfin has served as a floating museum for 23 years, and is moored next to the USS Arizona Memorial Visitor's Center. Known as the "Pearl Harbor Avenger," Bowfin was launched one year to the day after Dec. 7, 1941 and was credited with sinking 44 enemy ships during the course of her nine extraordinary war patrols.
