Manassas National Battlefield After Treatment
Summary
The friable nature of the media limited treatment options. After careful examination and consultation with other conservators and curators who had experience with St. Mémin drawings, it was decided the drawing should be removed from its wooden strainer to facilitate treatment and stabilize the drawing. Marilyn Kemp Weidner was consulted because she had removed other St. Mémin drawings from their strainers in the past.
Numerous disfiguring, dark, gray, stains remained after bathing. The dark stains were reduced by gentle mechanical action and inpainted with pastel pencils and watercolors. Areas where the media had been displaced due to a liquid staining appeared much lighter than the surrounding areas and were also inpainted with watercolors.
