Lt Col. Daniel Micklis, commanding officer of Battalion Landing Team, 1st Battalion, 1st Marines, 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, receives communion during a Protestant church service aboard the USS Wasp (LHD-1) on the coast of Okinawa, Japan, April 15, 2018. While underway, Marines and Sailors are able to participate in services of various religions and denominations. The Navy Chaplain Corps consists of over 800 chaplains from over 100 faith groups, meeting the needs of Marines’ and Sailors’ different beliefs. As the Marine Corps’ only continuously forward-deployed MEU, the 31st MEU provides a flexible force ready to perform a wide range of military operations throughout the Indo-Pacific region.
