"Long S" Box & Strip House, National Ranching Heritage Center (moved from Patricia vicinity, Martin County, TX), Lubbock, Lubbock County, TX
Summary
Significance: This small house was built on C. C. Slaughter's "Long S" Ranch, in northwestern Martin County, Texas, around the turn of the century. It is a fine example of box and strip construction, consisting of walls made of boards nailed to a sill and plate, with strips nailed over the cracks. No studs were used. This simple technique provided maximum interior space with a limited supply of lumber. It was used on the plains only after sawn lumber became available but was still expensive and difficult to obtain.
