Summary

Scope and content: This file unit consists of general correspondence received by Benjamin Lincoln in his capacity as Superintendent of Massachusetts Lighthouses. Included are letters and circulars related to proposals for new lighthouses, the supply of oil and other necessities, and keepers’ salaries. Also included are a list of accounts paid and a report on the state of the lighthouses under Lincoln’s control. Of note are five letters and circulars from Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton relating to expenses and the appointment of lighthouse superintendents. This file unit also contains a small amount of correspondence related to lighthouses at Cape Fear, North Carolina; Montauk, New York; and Eatons Neck (Long Island), New York.
