Letter from Jonathan Ward, Abington, [Massachusetts], to Amos Augustus Phelps, 1839 August 29th

Jonathan Ward writes to Amos A. Phelps discussing his approval of the new formation of the new abolitionist society and the establishment of a new newspaper. He writes "I hope it will be conducted on such principles, and with such a spirit, that all the real friends of immediate and entire emancipation will..willing to unite and will not have the objections, which many had to the sentiments, spirit, and style of Garrison." He continues to attack William Lloyd Garrison's character and abolitionist efforts, stating "I not only disliked his corrupt sentiments, but his style of writing and..his violent personal attacks on all whom I liked. This has always approved to me inconsistent with the spirit and principles of the gospel, the great law of love, and the golden rule."
