Letter from Charles Turner Torrey, [Cohasset, Massachusetts], to Caroline Weston, [1842 November 18]

Charles Turner Torrey writes to Caroline Weston in regards to George Latimer, a fugitive slave, has been ransomed for $400 and "that there will be of course no trial." Perhaps it will console you a little to hear that Mr. Marshal Lincoln says he should not have admitted any Ladies to the Coral Room except by the general entrance. He tells a story of Judge Harrington a justice of the supreme court of Vermont in 1811. A slaveholder brought a fugitive slave before him one day and made all possible proof of title to him and still the judge declared himself "not satisfied." He encourages her to read about it.
