The various articles of apparel which now makeup the costume of the Iroquois, are precisely thesame that they were at the epoch of the discovery.No change has been made in the articles themselves,although there have been changes in the materials ofwhich they Avere made. The deer-skin, in laterdays, has been laid aside for the broadcloth, and theporcupine quill for the bead. By making a resub-stitution of material, the original costume would berecovered in full. In preparing for the dance, all the articles above Ch. IV.) COSTUME. 267 described were not necessarily used by eaeli indi-vidual. Those strictly needful were tlie head-dress,the belt and kilt, to which each wearer added suchornaments and rattles as he was disposed.
