description

Summary

Print shows the log cabins and church that form the Sisters of Loretto convent. The fanciful image includes palm trees and other tropical flora amongst the Kentucky religious institution. The nuns bend in prayer in the convent courtyard to a standing Mary with a sword in her heart. Behind Mary, Jesus, crucified, is on the cross. Angels bear banners "O Suffering Jesus," and "O Sorrowful Mary." A key in French, Flemish, and English identifies the buildings.
This record contains unverified data from PGA shelflist card with subsequent revisions.
Purchase; Hubbard Fund (0213H).
The Kentucky convent known as "Little Loretto" was founded in 1812 by the Belgian Catholic priest Charles Nerinckx, who emigrated to the United States in 1804. He returned to Europe twice to raise funds for the Sisters of Loretto at the Foot of the Cross, and this engraving by Courtois of Malines may have been comissioned as part of a fundraising campaign.
Associated name on shelflist card: Courtois.
