Japanese-American volunteers. There's quite a difference between sneakers and a pair of heavy GI boots, Mitsuru Doi, eighteen, of Kauai, finds out. He was the first to put on the uniform of an American soldier. Looking on is a fellow inductee, Shuichi "Pete" Sakamoto, thirty-four, who before his induction was surveyor and civil engineer for the Lihue Plantation Company. Sakamoto, married, is the father of a two-year-old son
