Jacob van Strij was a Dutch painter who was born in Dordrecht in 1756. He was the son of a painter and received his early training from his father. He was also skilled in painting animals and landscapes. His style was influenced by the Dutch painters of the Golden Age, such as Jan van Huysum and Willem van Aelst. Van Strij's paintings were in great demand during his lifetime and he received many commissions from wealthy patrons. His works can be found in museums and private collections throughout Europe and the United States. Jacob van Strij died in Dordrecht in 1815 at the age of 59. He is remembered as one of the leading still life painters of his time.
