Invasive Japanese honeysuckle (Lonicera japonica), Charles Pinckney National Historic Site, 2014.

description

Summary

Native to eastern Asia, this twining vine (i.e., a climbing plant that grows in a helix around a support) is able to climb up to 33 feet high! Interestingly, this plant always twines around its support from left to right. This nonnative species is, probably not surprisingly, considered quite invasive in some areas where it easily out-competes native plants to dominate the landscape.
