Illustration asiatic archers and slingers
Summary
The Syrians and Palmyrenes, by age-old tradition, are skilled in using the bow, and provide a valuable series of auxiliary corps to the Roman army. The figure in the foreground here is based on a scene from the Dacian Wars (102–106 A.D.), as shown on Trajan's Column. In the background are the slingers, most of whom came from the Balearic Islands. Both bowmen and slingers are partly equipped in Roman fashion while retaining their native weapons.
