This action photo of the McGill University men’s hockey team was taken on the McGill campus by Alexander Henderson during the 1884 Winter Carnival Hockey Tournament in Montreal. It is believed to be the earliest known photograph of a hockey game in action.
Alexander Henderson Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, Henderson immigrated to Canada in 1853. Henderson opened a photographic studio in Toronto in 1858, specialising in portraiture. He was known for his use of the wet collodion process, which produced high-quality images on glass plates. Henderson also pioneered outdoor photography, capturing landscapes and cityscapes across Canada. He documented the construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway and the growth of cities such as Toronto and Montreal. Henderson's work has been exhibited at the National Gallery of Canada and the Art Gallery of Ontario. He was awarded the Royal Photographic Society's Progress Medal in 1903 for his contributions to the field of photography.
