Summary

HMS 'Mutine' passing to windward of HMS 'Helena' in a sailing trial, 1 September 1845
Inscribed top left 'No.18.' and bottom left 'Trial of sailing / HMS Mutine passing to / windward of HMS Helena / Sep 1st 1845'.
What is shown presumably occurred when Mends was first lieutenant of 'Mutine' at the Cape of Good Hope and the number in the top left corner also suggests it is one of a series of drawings he did of these sailing trials. 'Mutine' was a 12-gun brig built at Chatham in 1844 but wrecked near Venice four years later.
