Heavy gun in action (4687906269)

description

Summary

Australian soldiers in action, Western Front, during World War I. This photograph of Australian troops shows four or five teams of horses racing towards a field gun. Each team consists of six horses pulling what appear to be ammunition limbers. The field gun would be back behind the trenches and firing over the top of them, so it would appear that the horse teams are returning from the front-line trenches.
The Australians put 322,000 soldiers into World War I, of whom 60,000 were killed and 280,000 casualties. The Australian Imperial Force and the New Zealand Army Corps fought together under the title ANZAC.
