Greenwich from Blackwall
A view due south at low tide from the Blackwall Reach foreshore on the north side of the Thames, towards Greenwich. Greenwich Hospital is visible in the centre, with the Royal Observatory on the hill behind and left, and the town and tower of St Alfege on the right. East (left) of the Hospital can be seen the bulk of the old George Tavern, replaced by the Trafalgar in 1837 (or possibly the latter under construction). Shipping in the river includes a brig apparently hove-to and 'tiding down' on the last of the ebb. A Thames skiff (workboat) with three men is drawn up to the foreshore in the foreground where they are apparently either landing or dragging off a floating spar; others are lying on the mud, right. Various other foreshore buildings and boats are shown on the Blackwall side. The title and date are inscribed in pencil lower right and the picture was last exhibited by the Museum in Aug.-Sept. 1971.
