Summary

Scope and content: Green River Station, Wyoming. U.P. Railway 1871. Powell party ready to start. This spot is on left bank about 1/2 mile below U/P. Bridge, Wyoming. Old No. 426, 277. Identification of man and boats: Any, Clem Beaman with "Camanite"?; Jones, Jack, the Major, Fred with "Emma Dean"; Prof. Thompson, Steward, Cap. Frank with "Nellie Powell". Note 1: The original 11 men were: Major John W. Powell, S.V. Jones, Jack Hillers, Frederick S. Dellenbaugh, Prof. A.M. Thompson, Prof. J.F. Steward, Capt. F.M. Bishop, Frank Richardson, E.O. Beaman, Andy Hattan, and W. Clement Powell. Note 2: Nos. 444, 506, and 506A are not the same. No. 506 shows Major Powell's short right arm and he is, therefore, positively identified in that photograph and it is the best historical picture of the start of the trip.

John Karl Hillers was a German-American photographer and explorer, best known for his photographs of Native American tribes in the American West in the late 19th century. He worked as a photographer for the United States Geological Survey, documenting various expeditions in the western United States. Hillers is also credited with discovering and photographing Rainbow Bridge National Monument in Utah.
