was part of every Athenians education,but whereas flute-playing had become popular in the early partof the fifth century, it did not commend itself to Athenianeducationalists. Its moral effect was considered bad, and it wasan ungraceful performance which distorted the face. So it wasin the fourth century left for the most part to professional flute-girls.^ From the number of prizes offered it is obvious that theremust have been large entries for the musical competitions, andMommsen is probably right in assigning three days to these events.
