Summary
ot 6079-5: “Airship Roma” album. Airship Roma was purchased lighter-than-air aircraft purchased by the U.S. Army from the Italian government. Album shows the Billy Mitchell aircraft bombing tests on German and U.S. Navy ships, showing the vulnerability of ships to aerial bombing, July 18, 1921. The imagery is related to the bombing of the ex-German scout-cruiser Frankfurt. This image shows an exploding bomb by the starboard bow, about 10:17 a.m., dropped by U.S. Army aircraft. The circular holes to the left and right of the explosion are punched holes in the photograph. Part of the William Mitchell papers, transferred in 1953. (8/21/2015).
