General Lafayette spirit - National Parks Gallery
Summary
In 1834, after an appropriation from the 23rd Congress for Park repairs, the name of Lafayette Park was used for the first time. This was also the year LAFAYETTE died. His statue, the first of four statues erected in the corners of the Park memorializing Europeans who aided the United States during the Revolutionary War, was erected in 1891. An American flag has been at Lafayette’s gravesite in France since after World War I. In late July 2002, Congress voted to make Lafayette an Honorary Citizen of the United States.
