Franz Sedlacek - Bibliothek

Franz Sedlacek (1891-1945) was an Austrian painter known for his surrealist and fantastic works. He was born in Breslau (now Wroclaw, Poland) and studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. Sedlacek's paintings often depicted bizarre and dreamlike scenes, such as floating cities, anthropomorphic animals and mythical creatures. He was influenced by the work of Hieronymus Bosch and Pieter Bruegel the Elder, as well as the emerging Surrealist movement. During the Second World War, Sedlacek was conscripted into the German army and sent to the Eastern Front. He was captured by Soviet forces in 1944 and died in a POW camp the following year. Today Sedlacek's works are in the collections of museums such as the Albertina in Vienna and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
