Fort McCoy, Building No. T-10110, South side of South Eighth Avenue, Block 10, Sparta, Monroe County, WI
Summary
Significance: Building T-10110 is a Garage-Hospital, Type G-1, the only building of this type constructed in the hospital area at Camp McCoy. Building T-10110 accommodated six cars, but was soon inadequate to house the vehicles deployed to the hospital. In early 1942 the hospital had two field ambulances, but by the time Building T-10110 was constructed in October, 1942, the transportation pool had increased to seven field ambulances and three 1 1/2 ton trucks. The 1943 Annual Report to the Surgeon General noted a further increase of hospital vehicles during that year to eight field ambulances, four 1 1/2 ton trucks and a command car. Building T-10110's six-car capacity meant that even during the worst winter weather, half of the hospital's vehicles were parked outside. It is interesting to note that this shortage of garage space could have been alleviated somewhat if Building T-10110 had been constructed exactly according to the drawing that was utilized, which depicts a 10-car capacity. No information was found to explain this deviation from the plan.
