Summary

AWM caption : Studio portrait of 407006 Flying Officer (FO) Allan Leslie Norman, pilot of 20 Squadron RAAF. FO Norman came from South Australia and enlisted in the RAAF on 29 April 1940. While flying a mission in a Consolidated Catalina aircraft on 4 May 1942, he and his crew were shot down by Japanese fighter aircraft near Bougainville and taken captive at a Japanese prisoner of war camp near Rabaul. Subsequent to war's end, it was determined this crew were all executed by the Japanese Navy around November 1942, and buried in a cemetery (Matupi) near Rabaul. The bodies of FO Norman and his crew were later exhumed and reburied in the Bita Paka Commonwealth War Cemetery in Rabaul in June 1950.
