description

Summary

Desain Street in Vittoriosa (Birgu) on 10 August 1927, Feast of St.Lawrence.
Triq Desain, then called id-Daħla, looking south from the edge of Victory Square, before WW2 destruction and major realignment. The building on the right still exists. The building at the back of the Statue was lost during bombardments. The building on the left was also lost, today it is the St. Lawrence Parish Hall. This statue nowadays is erected near the St. Lawrence Parish Church just beside the Vittoriosa Maritime museum. This particular Pope declared the Church of St. Lawrence Parish in 1090.
The poster of the Constitutional Party — Hamilton and Strickland —would put it in election time, hence 1927 when election was held on 7th, 8th and 9th August
The local bakery/confectionery (later a tavern) was also named after the feast of the patron saint of the village ("Dolceria 10 Agosto")
From the private collection of Giovanni Bonello, via Times of Malta.
