El Camino de las Misiones, Ysleta, Socorro, San Elizario Vicinity, San Elizario, El Paso County, TX

Significance: The mission churches at Ysleta and Socorro and the church at San Elizario near El Paso represent remnants of an elaborate system of Spanish Indian missions, colonial villages and forts erected in southwest United States. While Spanish activity in the El Paso vicinity began with the 16th century travels of Cabeza Devaca (1535), it was not until 1659 that the first Franciscan mission, Nuestra Senora de Guadelupe de los Mansos y del Paso del Norte, was established.
