Michael Murphy carry wreaths to lie at the gravestones of service members killed by the same enemy forces as their son. Daniel and Maureen Murphy will accept the Medal on Honor of behalf of their son during a ceremony at the White House on Oct. 22, 2007. Lt. Murphy was killed June 28, 2005, during a reconnaissance mission while exposing himself to enemy fire in order to call in support after his four-man team came under attack by enemy forces. Murphy is the first service member to receive the honor for actions during Operation Enduring Freedom and the first Navy recipient of the medal since Vietnam.
