Kitagawa Utamaro (1753–1806) was a Japanese artist. He is one of the most respected designers of ukiyo-e woodcuts and paintings and is best known for his bijin okubi-e "images of beautiful women with big heads" from the 1790s. He also studied nature, particularly illustrated books about insects.
