Summary

The recipe for making porcelain was not known in Europe until the 18th century. European potters produced earthenware covered with a layer of tin glaze. This dish clearly demonstrates the influence of Chinese porcelain. The painted decorations, however, are much simpler than
those found on genuine porcelain. Moreover, the back of the dish is not white; the yellow clay is merely covered with a transparent lead glaze.

In the early 17th century, tin-glazed earthenware was made in Holland, in the town of Delft, whence the art was introduced into England. Delft thus refers to tin-glazed wares produced both in the Netherlands and in England.
