Such homes are notoften found among land-owners, but rather among the moreshiftless class of tenants and in the overflow of humanity onthe outskirts of cities and large towns. They are to thecountry what tenements are to the city, and their lot is appeal-ingly pitiful since land values have gone so high. Their pres-ence suggests the country slum sometimes mentioned inrecent literature, and the hopeless despondency and fatalismof country life is nowhere more apparent than within their 24 COUNTRY LIFE AND THE COUNTRY SCHOOL walls. Though not, in most cases, a product of rural forcesalone, nor particularly characteristic of country life, theresponsibility for the care of these homes is upon rural socialinstitutions and rests most heavily upon the school.
