Chief Charlie Snakelum with his wife, Ebey's Landing National Historical Reserve, 2014.
Summary
NPS Collection photo: The famous Chief Charlie Snakelum's canoe can be seen in the background. Believed to be acquired by Snakelum in the early 1850's and passed down to his eldest son of the same name, the canoe was displayed at the Block House Inn which is now the Island County Historical Museum grounds. Over the years, time, weather and sourvenir-seekers have taken their toll on the ancient canoe. However, a restoration project began a few years ago so that the canoe can become the centerpiece of the museum's Native American exhibit.
