General Statement Establishment of the School The School of Mines is a state educational in-stitution, and is at the present almost wholly main-tained by appropriations of the State Legislature.It is endowed with 40,000 acres of South Dakotaland, a grant from the federal government. It re-ceives a comparatively small income from the rent-al of these lands, which are, however, steadily in-creasing in value. The school is under the Regentsof Education. The regents, five in number, areappointed by the governor, confirmed by the sen-ate and have control of the various public insti-tutions of learning maintained wholly, or in part bythe state as state institutions. The following is an extract from the act of thelegislature, establishing the School of Mines: Section 1. (School of Mines Established.) That aSchool of Mines for the Territory of Dakota be establishedat Rapid City, in Pennington County, Dakota Territory. Itshall be the object of such School of Mine3 to furnish facil-ities for th
