Bounded north, by Lower Canada; east,by New Hampshire, from which it is separated by Con-necticut riverj south, by Massachusetts; west, bv NewYork. Civil Divisions. Vermont is divided into the follow-ing counties, viz. Bennington, Rutland, Addison, Chit-tenden, Orange, Windsor, Windham, Franklin, Orleans,Caledonia and Essex. These counties are divided into 230 towns or town-ships, most of which are incorporated with the privilegesusually annexed to the towns in New England. Lakes and Rivers. Few parts of the world are bet-ter watered than this state. Perennial fountains rise onalmost every farm. Streams descend from the moun-tains in various directions, which, uniting, from manyrivers of various magnitudes, that fertilize the landsthrough which they pass, and furnish an abundant supplyof seats for mills and founderies.
