Historic photograph of Burnside Bridge taken in September 1862 by Alexander Gardner (1821-1882) and printed later in 1866. The photo is taken from the eastern side of Antietam Creek and slightly north of bridge, looking towards the bridge. A white arrow was added to highlight the Sycamore tree visible in the lower left of the photograph situated right up against the bridge. This tree is a "Witness Tree" and still stands today.
This image was altered in January 2023 for use in a StoryMap focusing on Witness/Notable Trees in National Capital Region, NPS. The color mode was changed to grayscale. Dust, scratches, and other obvious damage was removed. Sections were manually lightened or darkened to remove imperfections in original image. Image contrast and levels adjusted for clarity.
