Introduction f The purpose of this survey was to determine as far as possiblethe composition and ecological relation of the prairie vegetation ofIllinois. The prairie area of this state is an eastern arm of the prairieregion proper which forms a distinct formation between the grass-landsof -the Great Plains on the west and the deciduous hardwood forest onthe east. While the origin of this prairie dates back to the changes inclimate following the uplift of the Rocky Mountains and subsequentchanges during and following the glacial period, the factors limiting itspresent distribution are to be found in the present climatic and edaphicconditions together with the biotic factors which affect succession fromprairie to forest associations.
